Temperature range of physical aging of PC for compact discs
Original language description
Relaxation of polycarbonate (PC) used for injection molding of compact discs was studied after temperature down-jumps from the equilibrium above Tg to glassy state by the methods of dilatometry and calorimetry. The magnitude of the changes was describedby volume and enthalpy relaxation rates. The temperature dependencies of enthalpy and volume relaxation rates are not identical. Both dependencies have a maximum, but at different temperatures. Enthalpy relaxation rate maximum has been found between theglass transition temperature, Tg, and secondary transition, Tb, while volume relaxation rate has its maximum in the region of Tb. A substantial finding is that both types of relaxation do not vanish at ambient temperature. Although enthalpy relaxation rate is low (approximately 0.05 J/g per time decade), the high volume relaxation rate retains, achieving value 3.8x10-4 cm3/cm3 per decade, which is approximately 50 % of the maximum rate at Tb.
