Visualization and modelling of LDPE interfacial instability in coextrusion geometries

  • Original language description

Flow visualisation studies have been used to study the effects of die geometry on interfacial instabilities in coextrusion flows of LDPE melts. Slit coextrusion visualisation cells with 30° and 90° convergent stream angles are used in this study, particularly examining the region of flow concurrence. Stream flow ratios leading to interfacial instability in LDPE melts are quantified and compared for each geometry. Computer modelling of these viscoelastic flows has been undertaken, using a White-Metzner model with a modified Leonov model. This shows excellent agreement with the detailed flow velocity and stress birefringence results, and emphasizes the importance of extensional flow in the die. All of the original studies were conducted on a die which split then recombined a single melt stream; a new die has been built which allows two matched extruders to feed different polymers into a visualization cell. Initial results from this cell will also be reported.

Vizualizace a modelování meziplošných nestabilit při koextruz tavenin LDPE
