Effect of additional compounds on poly (vinylalcohol) biodegradation

  • Original language description

Study was focused on poly(vinylalcohol) (PVA) biodegradation in the system containing other available carbon and energy sources (tryptone and sucrose). Unacclimed activated sludge was used during initial biodegradation experiments. Results showed that relatively rapid polymer degradation occurred if PVA was present as the only carbon substrate, whereas degradation of PVA markedly suppressed in the presence of tryptone and sucrose. No acceleration was found when putative specific growth factors (pyrroloquinoline quinone, secondary alcohols) were added. PVA degrading bacterium designated Ž1 was subsequently isolated from the employed activated sludge. This strain along with the other two previously isolated bacteria were than investigated. It was observed that all three bacteria were able to utilize tryptone for their growth while sucrose was not utilized. The final tests showed that PVA degradation by the sludge enriched with Ž1 culture in the presence of tryptone proceeded successfully

Vliv přídavných látek na biodegradaci polyvinylalkoholu
