Antibacterial modifications of polymers by using metallic compounds

  • Original language description

Polymers are mainly used as substitutions for metals, glass and wood in many applications because of their valuable physico-chemical properties and economical benefit. One of the fields of polymer applications is the production of various materials usedin hospital healthcare including medical devices. However, there is a significant disadvantage of their use represented by the fact that most of the polymer surfaces do not resist bacterial colonization. It can give cause for development of various infections, which can have serious consequences to the patients as well as to hospital staff. The possible solutions have been found in the development and production of antibacterial polymers; i.e. intentionally physically or chemically modified polymers that are resistant to a bacterial colonization. In addition, the polymer matrix can be used as a carrier for a drug and thus help to patient?s healing process. This work deals with development and characterization of new antibacterial polyme
