Interrelation between photodegradation and biodegradation of environmentally degradable polymers (PLA and PBAT)

  • Original language description

It is well known that polymer materials age. The consequence is a loss of properties which leads to an increase of waste production. The problematic of the environmentaly safe treatment of these polymer wastes is of prime importance and recently motivated development of biodegradable and/or bio-compostable polymers. Despite the methodology to judge these properties is still discussed, standard European method EN 13432 can be at least cited. This method applies to fresh materials (non aged) and we can wonder if the results obtained are still valid after ageing of the polymer materials which were intended to be biodegradable (or bio-compostable). Moreover, it is also well known that during the ageing, for example photo-ageing, polymer materials often undergo a deep molecular evolution and in such a case mentioned questions necessitate exact experiments to be answered. Some recent papers seems to point out some doubts about the entire biodegradable character of PBAT after ageing and try t
