Electrorheological properties of suspensions of rod-like titanium oxide/polypyrrole particles

  • Original language description

Titanium oxide/polypyrrole (TiO2/PPy) particles with core-shell structure were synthesized as a novel dispersed phase for electrorheological (ER) suspensions in this study. Core of these composite particles was prepared from TiO2 nanoparticles via simpleand rapid microwave-assisted molten-salt synthesis and, subsequently, coated with conducting polymer polypyrrole via an oxidative polymerization forming a shell. The structural composition and morphology of prepared particles were examined with X-Ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. The XRD revealed increase in the rutile phase of TiO2 after the synthesis while SEM proved the formation of micrometer-sized rod-like particles. The ER activity of suspensionsof prepared rod-like TiO2 particles and their PPy-coated variant was examined using a rotational rheometer under various electric field strengths. It was found that polypyrrole coating significantly improves the ER performance as was als
