Stabilization/solidification of selenium-containing waste
Original language description
This paper deals with the stabilization/solidification of hazardous waste originating from the production of magnesium alloys. The waste contained high amounts of selenium and soluble inorganic salts, particularly chlorides. Stabilization/solidificationof this waste using Portland cement alone was not sufficient because of high selenium levels in the extracts. The leachability of selenium was reduced by the addition of technical ferrous sulfate, known as green vitriol and originating as a by-product from titanium dioxide production. The proposed composition of the mixture for the waste stabilization/solidification comprised 50 % of the waste, 30 % of Portland cement and 20 % of green vitriol. The stabilized/solidified waste met the criteria for non-hazardous waste in the leaching tests. The cost estimation showed that the proposed treatment method was also effective in economic terms.
