Biodegradability of materials based on Poly(vinylpyrrolidone)/Fe3+ after UV irradiation
Original language description
This study deals with an influence of Fe3+ ion content in the PVP-based material and the subsequent UV irradiation on its biodegradability. A series of materials with different concentrations of Fe3+ ions (0.5 - 1.5 wt. % according to the PVP weight) was prepared by a casting method using glycerol as a plasticizer and natural zeolite as filler, to ensure appropriate technological and usable properties. The prepared materials were subjected to UV irradiation for a theoretical period of 105 days. Finally, the influence of irradiation on the biodegradation of these materials was observed in water environment under aerobic conditions with activated sludge from the municipal wastewater treatment as inoculum. The biodegradability of PVP in the presence of Fe3+ was evaluated on the basis of CO2 production using a MicroOxymax O2/CO2/CH4 respirometer. Unfortunately, the materials have been degraded only very slightly (cca 8 %) either after irradiation or before it. The concrete reasons of such a behavior will be a subject of the following research. It can be concluded that the presence of Fe3+ ions in the PVP based material probably has no significant effect on its biodegradation neither after UV irradiation.
