Investigation of Stability and Aging of Solubilized Dialdehyde Cellulose
Original language description
Dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) is a precursor for preparation of various materials (polyacids, hydrogels). It can be obtained by a highly specific periodate oxidation of 2,3- hydroxyl groups of cellulose to aldehydes, cleaving the C2-C3 bond of anhydroglucose unit in the process. In our work, products of periodate oxidation of cellulose were identified by NMR spectroscopy for the first time. Study of the aging of acidic DAC solutions confirmed their usability even after several weeks from preparation, lifting the need to prepare a fresh solution each time as was the case for neutral/basic pH. Besides, the molecular weight of DAC can be controlled by the conditions of solubilization process, which allows to easily prepare material with desired degree of polymerization.
