Improvement of the mechanical and biological properties of PVA-based scaffolds by the addition of fractionated Kraft Lignin

  • Original language description

Scaffolds based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and Kraft lignin were prepared in a variety of reciprocal ratios. The improvement in mechanical properties correlated with the amount of Kraft lignin in PVA matrices. Similarly, the cytotoxicity increased with the increasing concentration of Kraft lignin. However, none of the tested samples showed severe cytotoxicity. The critical property for any scaffold is the ability of cells to ingrow and survive within its internal structure. The ingrowth of cells was tested using bioreactors creating simulated in vivo conditions. In the context of all the mentioned parameters, the most advantageous properties were exhibited by the scaffold containing 99 wt% of PVA and 1 wt% of Kraft lignin. The composites with 1 wt% of Kraft lignin showed sufficient mechanical stability, a lack of cytotoxicity, and mainly the ability to allow cells to ingrow into the scaffold in a rotation bioreactor.
