Characterization and properties of gels based on emulsions stabilized by cellulose nanocrystals and caseinate

  • Original language description

The aim of this work was to study Pickering emulsions stabilized with MFC and NCC, used as vehicles for transdermal delivery of lipophilic actives, namely components of essential oils limonene and cinnamaldehyde, which both are known as transdermal enhancers. Pickering emulsions of the oil-in-water (o/w) type were prepared and characterized with respect to their physico-chemical properties. Four formulations were tested; all emulsions were stabilized with 0.5 wt% of CNC or MFC and encapsulated 10 wt% of cinnamaldehyde or limonene. The in vitro distribution of encapsulated actives was determined in excised pig skin after 24 h exposure on the skin surface, in the horny layer by tape stripping, in the epidermis, dermis and in the receptor fluid using the static Franz diffusion cell method. The amount of essential oils in the skin layers was quantified using HPLC and evaluation of the emulsions was performed by comparison with references, non-encapsulated oils.
