The Effect of Mold Construction on Quality of Plastic Part Produced by Vacuum Thermoforming

  • Original language description

Vacuum thermoforming is a manufacturing technology enabling the production of large-scale and more complex shape plastic parts. The manufacturing process can be advantageously modified, for example, by using pre-blowing or shape plugs to achieve a more uniform thickness distribution. The uniform thickness distribution, or not exceeding the thickness limit value, is important from the point of view of mechanical and also fire properties (e.g. according to regulation 118 fire safety standards). The use of computer simulations, or behavior modeling respectively, of the polymeric materials during thermoforming process, enables to save a great deal of financial cost, time and production capacity. Application of suitable rheological models (e.g. K-BKZ Wagner model, or Leonov model), it is possible to describe the behavior of the polymer sheet during pre-heating and subsequent thermoforming and thus detect possible defects at the product (webbing, chill marks, and thinning). The research is focused on evaluation of the influence of selected construction mold/part components - draft angle, curve radius, rib size and spacing, on changes in thickness distribution on the final part with the help of computer modeling.
