Wettability analysis and water absorption studies of plasma activated polymeric materials

  • Original language description

One straightforward strategy to modify certain surface properties without altering polymer bulk properties is by using nonthermal plasma technologies, such as corona, dielectric barrier, radiofrequency, and microwave discharges. Furthermore, plasma treatment is a very versatile technique, since various carrier gases may be employed, giving unique features to the material that has been treated. Every single polymer, either biological or synthetic, behaves differently in the presence of water or any other liquid, therefore, hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity is one of the most relevant parameters of treated surfaces and material customization. This chapter seeks to underline the importance of wettability analysis in this field by showing some examples which have been studied in recent years. This chapter gives special attention to adhesion, printability, water resistance, and oleophobicity of the treated polymeric materials as well as analytical techniques and practical applications from scientific research to industrial application.
