Plasma mediated fucoidan immobilization onto PET surface to avoid biomaterial associated blood coagulation

  • Original language description

Biomaterials associated blood coagulation is one of the biggest drawbacks of bloodcontacting devices. Surface modification is one of the ecient way to increase haemocompatibility, by immobilization of anticoagulant agents onto the polymeric surfaces. However, most of the polymeric biomaterials are inert and lack of functional bonding sites for chemical agent immobilization. Plasma treatment is fast, heat-free method to create functional oxidative groups and increase the surface roughness without using any chemicals and it treats only the near-surface area to keep bulk polymer properties unchanged. In this work, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was subjected to direct current air plasma for 60 s, subsequently subjected to the 1% (w/v) aqueous solution of fucoidan from Fucus vesiculosus for 24 at various pH values to optimize the bonding performance, therefore the anticoagulant activity. Surface properties of samples were monitored using water contact angle measurement, chemical analyses were performed by FTIR and XPS, and their anticoagulant activity was tested by means of prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time and thrombin time. Each of the fucoidan immobilized surface was performed anticoagulantion activity by extending the thrombin time threshold and their pH5 counterpart performed the best result compare to others.
