Thermal Analysis of Post-Cured Aramid Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites
Original language description
During this study, through vacuum infusion method, aramid fiber-reinforced polymer (AFRP) composites were fabricated and then post-cured, under specific heating/cooling rates, in an electric oven. By Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) the storage modulus, loss modulus, tanδ and glass transition temperature (Tg) of the AFRP composites in the range 30-200 °C and under 1, 5 and 10 Hz, were determined whereas Thermomechanical Analysis (TMA), in the modes of creep-recovery and stress-relaxation tests, was also performed. Furthermore, the docomposition of AFRP composites, aramid fibers and pure post-cured epoxy matrix, under air or nitrogen (N2 Stmosphere, was explored through Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). From this point of view, TGA in air, the results show that very fast decomposition, with high rate, took part in the range 500-600 °C; the aramid fibers and AFRP composites lost the biggest part of their weight in this range. Moreover, through the TGA tests, the very good thermal stability of the aramid fibers was revealed and also that the volume fraction of fibers (Φf) is approximatelly Φf = 30.22%.
