The Effect of Sorbitor-based Nucleating Agent on Crystallization and Recrystallization of Polybut-1-ene
Original language description
The work deals with the crystallization and recrystallization of polybut-1-ene (PB-1) and random PB-1 copolymer. The effect of the addition of the nucleating agent (NU) 1,2,3,4-bis(3,4-dimethylbenzylidene) sorbitol, commercial clarifying agent for polypropylene Millad 3988, on the crystallization and subsequent recrystallization is studied, particularly in relation to the kinetics of the process. The NU was mixed into PB-1 at concentrations of 0.2 and 0.6 wt.% using a twin-screw extruder. The crystallization and recrystallization in defined times of ageing at room temperature was characterized by spectrophotometry, wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found, that the addition of NU increases the haze significantly, which is probably due to the change in the spherulitic structure. WAXS analysis revealed that NU acceleratesrecrystallization from phase II to I in homopolymer. In the case of the copolymer, the effect of NU is not as pronounced, however, it also interferes with the recrystallization process. According to DSC, the addition of NU increases the crystallization temperature as well as narrows the crystallization peak, which means that the overall crystallization process is accelerated. This effect is more pronounced in copolymer. Moreover, the copolymer samples with the addition of NU have significantly narrower melting peaks, which corresponds to the formation of a more uniform structure. Thus, it can be confirmed that the addition of commercial NU Millad 3988 has a significant effect on the crystallization and recrystallization behavior of both the PB-1 homopolymer and the PB-1 copolymer, even at a concentration of 0.2 wt.%. With higher concentrations of this NU, the processes do not change significantly.
