EXAMINING THE IMPACT OF SOCIOECONOMIC FACTORS ON AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY AMONG SMALLHOLDER FARMERS IN VAYOC DZOR PROVINCE, ARMENIA
Original language description
The contribution of small scale farmers to the aggregate agricultural production in the Republic of Armenia cannot be overemphasized owing to the larger proportion of these farmers in the agribusiness sector in the country. Examining the socioeconomic characteristics of these farmers is needful if improvement in the agricultural sector of the country is to be realized. This study therefore examined the socioeconomic characteristics influencing agricultural productivity among small scale farmers in the Armenia. A random sampling method was employed to obtain a sample size used for the study. Descriptive statistics, input-output productivity measure and ordinary least square regression model were used to analyze the data. The respondents were mainly male, married with mean household size of 5 and mean age of 42 years showing that a good proportion of the sampled respondents were in their economic active age. Profile of agricultural production revealed that rearing of cattle and pigs dominated the animal production sub sector while vegetable production dominated crop production subsector. Findings revealed that six (age of farmers, household size, years of farming experience, educational status, access to agricultural training and access to credit facilities) out of the nine coefficients of the socioeconomic variables included in the model are significant factors that influence agricultural productivity. The study therefore recommends among others that younger generations should be encouraged to be engaged in agricultural production and agricultural value chain. Credit facilities and agricultural training should be made available and accessible to farmers while farmers that receive financial aid from government should be monitored by appropriate government office. Due regards should also be accorded to infrastructural development.
