Military Brownfields in City Peripheries: Emerging Areas for Recreation and Landscape Protection, a Case Study of Ostrava and Milovice (Czech Republic) and Kharkiv (Ukraine)
Original language description
Military brownfields, unique in their extensive areas and significant environmental contamination, present a paradox. Despite their burdens, these areas on the outskirts of cities often boast substantial forest cover or vegetation reminiscent of steppe landscapes. This unique juxtaposition offers potential for their utilisation, after remediation of environmental burdens, in landscape management and public accessibility for recreational purposes. To explore this potential, a narrative analysis with data triangulation from various sources was employed. The results reveal that selected military brownfields in the Czech Republic have already advanced in their transformation, being repurposed into recreational and landscape protection areas accessible to the public. Meanwhile, in the case study area of Ukraine, such activities are still in their early stages, with the potential to draw from experiences in transforming industrial brownfields. The chapter underscores the importance of a strategic and coordinated approach involving all stakeholders in land transformation, public land ownership, and harmonising commercial activities with landscape preservation.
