A BIBLIOMETRIC LITERATURE REVIEW OF ETHICAL CONSUMPTION AND I-B GAP AMONG GEN-Z
Original language description
This study provides a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of 88 peer-reviewed articles published between 2002 and 2025, systematically examining ethical consumption and the intention-behavior (I-B) gap among Generation Z. Employing tools such as BibliometrixR and PRISMA frameworks, the analysis maps publication trends, highlights thematic developments, and uncovers the intellectual structure underpinning this emerging field. Findings reveal that research on Gen Z’s ethical consumption has surged since 2021, fueled by global sustainability concerns and Gen Z’s rising societal influence. However, a persistent disconnect remains between ethical intentions and actual behaviors, with digital platforms and peer influences emerging as key yet understudied mediators. While India leads in publication volume, Western countries (notably the USA and UK) dominate citation impact, indicating an imbalance in global scholarly influence. Methodologically, the field is characterized by a reliance on quantitative approaches like PLS-SEM and the continued prominence of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), although integration with broader sustainability frameworks is limited. The bibliometric mapping also spotlights emerging research niches, including technological mediation (such as augmented reality) and cultural factors (like trust), suggesting fertile ground for interdisciplinary collaboration. As one of the first studies to systematically map the I-B gap in Gen Z’s ethical consumption, this work synthesizes contributions from 241 authors across 54 journals and highlights overlooked areas such as digital mediation, cross-cultural insights, and crisis-driven consumption while offering strategic recommendations and a replicable methodology for future research.
