Thermal properties of a four-pane window filled with phase change materials
Original language description
This article presents results of the research done in 2016 on the thermal behaviour of the thermal storage four-pane window with an application of the phase change material (PCM). The new technology intent is to improve thermal insulation parameters of the window and subsequently to gain thermal accumulation by application of PCM. The PCM is filled in the whole cavity of one of the tree slots between plain glazes used in the window. The outermost layer of the window contains the shading elements to reduce solar radiation. An inner layer is filled with the PCM. The window design is meant as to fulfil all requirements for windows as concern as daily light transparency, thermal resistance and in addition to have a thermal accumulation and solar radiation shading properties. In the article are described the results of evaluation of the declared properties by manufacturer by measurement in our laboratory and by simulation techniques. The measurement procedures were realised in the calorimetric chamber, where the tested window was placed in the partition between chambers simulating both inner and outer climatic conditions. The surface temperature and heat flux were measured under thermal transient conditions and in thermal steady state conditions. The thermal fields on the window surfaces were snapped by the thermal camera as well. There were found undesirable effects in the PCM layer during the tests. The solidification of the PCM led to sedimentation of the PCM salts showing the problem of incongruent melting. The sediment of hydrate salt formed in the bottom of the window crusts which impedes the heat release from the PCM and so deteriorates the recrystallization of the PCM and thus violates presumed thermal accumulation function.
