Background: In the Czech Republic most patients die while in institutional care. More than 60% (> 60,000 patients) of these deaths occur as a result of progression or complications pert to a chronic disease. Healthcare professionals make decisions that significantly affect the way people spend the final stages of their lives. A person's dignity is an important entity. Aims: 1) What does human dignity actually mean? 2) What does human dignity mean in the final phase of someone’s life? Methodology: Content analysis of ethical codes and international and national documents which directly or indirectly relate to human dignity ethics in healthcare. The documents are confronted with studies undertaken since 2008. onclusion: Research into dignified dying suggests that people wish to be dying without pain while being rendered professional care, at peace with life, surrounded by family.
