This chapter elaborates on concepts pertinent to the study of Adult Learning Systems (ALS). Varieties of ALS typologies are discussed, tracing typologies from the 1990s from comparative economics and politics that have contributed to understanding institutional phenomena in adult learning. Notable contributions from Esping-Andersen (1990) and Hall and Soskice (2001) are highlighted for their insights into welfare state regimes and varieties of capitalism, respectively. Recent research on social investment typologies further elucidates the institutional context of ALS. Consideration is given to methodological nationalism and its impact on adult education research, advocating for an institutional perspective that considers national, sub-national, and transnational processes. Core elements framing ALS are outlined, emphasising the importance of institutional overlap among formal education, labour market, welfare state regime, and liberal education institutions. It concludes with a conceptual framework for stakeholder interactions and dynamics, proposing an analytical approach to studying ALS governance at political and operational levels.
