The bullets wounding potential and safety management
Original language description
The effect, that can be reached by a fire arm, represents not only the level of “dangerousness” but also its utility value for very particular purposes. It is very important for both users and producers of hand fire arms to determine any easy controllable physical value that could help to divide the fire arms into categories according to their performance. As a measure of a bullet effect on target was selected the bullet impact kinetic energy (EI). This approach is simplified because the bullet effect on target depends not only on the bullet impact kinetic energy but also on many other factors as well. For the quantitative evaluation of the bullets wound effect there are used many wounding potential critera. These critera went through their own development. It was necessary to separate the development of the ammunition intended for defense (hand rifles) wounding potential criterion and of powerful rifle ammunition wounding potential criterion with respect to their different structural characteristics and their ballistic parametres. In addition to the analytically derived wounding potential criterion, the shooting experiment became a basic evaluation approach based on the ballistic simulation of a real wound injury on the physical model representing a biological target. Measurement methods of the bullets penetration depth into various solid and also plastic media (their mechanical and physical characteristics are closer to characteristics of biological tissue) were effective in the past because of their simplicity and also in many cases for their sufficient accuracy. The most used solid substitute medium for these purposes are fir or spruce wood, steel or duralumin metal sheets of predefined thicknesses. There are also in use other plastic materials like propellant, gelatine, soap, plasticine and also mixture of petroleum and paraffin. Experimentaly obtained characteristics, those describe the bullets penetration into the block of substitute medium (SM) became a base for derivation of various critera and methodologies for the ammunition wounding potential evaluation against the live force.
