In Vitro Models for Testing the Effect of Mediator on Heating in Electro-Hypertermia

  • Original language description

Background: The ability of magnetic particles to be heated up by AC magnetic field has outlined a new effective method for tumour?s treatment ? magnetic hyperthermia. Recently there?ve been attempts to use the energy of electric field for the same purpose. The electro hyperthermia method works due to the significant difference in conductivity of malignant and healthy tissue which makes the method selective. Although the penetration depth of electric field is smaller than in the case of magnetic field, its absorption efficiency is higher. In order to increase the efficiency further we proposed to use electrically lossy magnetic fluid as a mediator in electro-hyperthermia. Methods: To test the effect of mediator on the heating of malignant cells, the hepatocellular carcinoma cell line (Hep G2; ATCC) and human immortalized non-tumorigenic keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT; CLS were used) were used. As the mediator, maghemite-based ferrofluid with special morphology giving rise to high dielect
