Biodegradable Polyesters for Medical Applications
Original language description
During recent decades great progress has been made in the medical and pharmaceutical field around the world. It is also known that such development has been attributed to discovering and utilizing a new sort of material ? biodegradable polymers. Althoughthere are various types special interest was paid to some polyester due to their unique properties. There are three key materials belonging to this family of polymers, poly(lactic acid) (PLA), poly(glycolic acid) (PGA) and polycaprolactone (PCL). Amongthem, especially PLA and its copolymers play a dominant role. The main applications of synthetic biodegradable polyesters in the medical field and particular attention is paid to areas of implants, drug delivery systems, materials for tissue engineering?nano scaffolds? and hydrogels. The presentation will address the biodegradable polyesters with focus on the PLA as the most significant member and the application of these materials in the medical and pharmaceutical field.
