Tensiometric Study of Magnetorheological Suspensions' Stability
Original language description
This study focuses not only on the improvement of particles' stability in the magnetorheological (MR) suspension but also on the use of suitable technique called tensiometry evaluating the mutual compatibility between main components of the MR suspensions as well as their sedimentation. The magnetic particles investigated in this study were pure carbonyl iron (CI) and its poly-siloxane grafted analogue (grafting density 50 groups/nm2). Differences between the surface free energy of particles under investigation were evaluated based on the Owens, Wendt, Rabel and Kaelble (OWRK) method. Although the surface free energy was not significantly changed after the grafting of CI particles (23.6 mN/m) with polysiloxane (26.1 mN/m), the sedimentation stability measured also via tensiometer was improved after the grafting since grafted particles have higher disperse part compared to non-grafted particles resulting in better wetting with non-polar silicone oil used as a carrier liquid.
