Bacterial Cellulose: Production and Characterization
Original language description
Bacterial cellulose (BC) has received substantial interest owing to its unique structural features and impressive physico-mechanical and biocompatible properties. In comparison to plant cellulose, BC is chemically pure without hemicellulose and lignin. BC fibers exhibit a high crystalline nano-structure, high tensile strength and good moldability. It is non-allergic, non-toxic and non-pyrogenic material and due to these features it can be used in healing applications. In this experiment, we used bacterial strain Gluconacetobacter xylinus as a producer of biopolymer and the factors affecting its biosynthesis were studied. The cellulose production, determination of molar mass of BC, the structure as well as morphology are described.
