Sponge-like magnetic material based on EPDM rubber filled with carbonyl iron particles

  • Original language description

Magnetic field-responsive materials are of high interest due to their controllable physical properties via an external magnetic field. They exhibit a remarkable change in rheological properties The MR elastomers have recently become a matter of many research groups. The use of solid matrix instead of liquid fluid suppress the sedimentation problem with MR suspensions; however, on the other side, the immobilize particles are fixed in the polymer matrix and the difference in the rheological parameters in the presence and in the absence of a magnetic field is thus low. In last years, a few papers on the MR foam have been published. These foams involve the solid structure prohibiting the particles from sedimentation and at the same time, the matrix is flexible enough in order to enable achievement of high difference in the rheological performance in the presence and in the absence of a magnetic field. Magnetorheological foams thus exhibit higher differences in storage modulus in comparison with MR elastomers. Nevertheless, only few papers have been published on MR behavior of MR foam. This study deals with preparation sponge-like EPDM rubbers filled with magnetic carbonyl iron particles. The influence of the various weight fraction of carbonyl iron particles (150-250 phr) and two levels of foaming agent were investigated. The rheological measurements were done using a rotational rheometer, where the sample was loaded with a defined pressure. The results were further compared with the MR elastomers based on EPDM rubber with magnetic particles without a foaming agent.
