Facile microwave assisted synthesis of Co and Ni doped ZnO nanoparticles and their use in MEH-PPV nanocomposites
Original language description
ZnO is a semiconductor material widely used in versatile applications in optoelectronic and piezoelectric devices.1 The doping of ZnO with transition metals like Fe, Co, Mn, Ni, Cr or V opens a new research topic leading to materials with completely different behavior towards magnetic and optical properties.2 In this work, facile microwave assisted preparation of Co and Ni doped ZnO nanoparticles is presented. The microwave synthesis is based on high temperature decomposition of zinc acetate dihydrate and metal (Co, Ni) acetylacetonates in diethyleneglycol with the presence of oleic acid as a capping agent. The doping levels of metals were 1, 5, and 10 mol%. Obtained nanoparticles (size 8–12 nm) were separated as powders or as stable colloidal solutions in toluene. The advantage of such nanocolloids is that they can be immediately mixed with polymers soluble in toluene to form composite materials. Our nanocolloid solutions were mixed with Poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) polymer to produce nanocomposites suitable for preparation of thin layers using spin coating technology. Nanocomposites of MEH-PPV and Co, Ni-doped ZnO formed homogeneous thin layers with interesting optical and optoelectronic properties. The effect of doping, structural, optical, and optoelectronic properties of products were studied by variety of physico-chemical methods (UV-Vis, powder XRD, PL, TGA, SEM, TEM, FTIR).
