Infrared spectroscopic investigation of relationship between strain energy and distribution of oil on freshly fractured surface of vulcanizates

  • Original language description

A given grade oj styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) was compounded at two different paraffin oil concentrations, 4.5 and 9.0 phr with other standard compounding ingredients, vulcanized under a defined set of curing parameters and then the cured and notched samples were subjected to tensile test up to break at two different strain rates of 100 and 500 mm·min-1. The strain energy of the samples as a function of oil concentration and strain rate were determined up to total rupture. Consecutively, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopic studies on the newely generated fractured surfaces were done to trace the concentration of the oil, quantifiable through a characteristic IR absorbance peak height at a defined fixed distance from the end of the notch. Finally, the redistributed oil concentrations were plotted against the strain energy for the two defined strain rates. An increase in the applled strain rate was reflected as a decreased in the strain energy. Also, the redistributed concentration of the oil was directly proportional to the strain energy.
