Quick read on durability with the Intrinsic Strength Analyzer
Original language description
We discuss a new instrument - the Coesfeld Intrinsic Strength Analyser (ISA) - that represents the first commercialization of a classical method from polymer science for assessing Jong-term durability. The testing method quantifies a rubber compounďs fatigue threshold in a few hours where prior art near-threshold fatigue crack growth measurements required weeks or months. This low severity threshold can be combined with tear strength at high severity to provide a rapid method of assessing crack growth response that is useful in compound development and plant mixing quality control. The method may also have other applications - such as rubber-road abrasion - where long-term damage development must be managed. It has been noticed, for example, that the superior wear resistance ofbutadiene rubber versus natural rubber in tire treads seems to be correctly predicted by the method.
