The Effect of Surface Substrate Treatments on the Bonding Strength Between Aluminum and Glass-Reinforced Poly(Phenylene Sulfide)
Original language description
The composite materials of the polymer matrix reinforced with carbon/glass fibers providing lightweight with superior mechanical properties are widely used as structural components for automotive and aerospace applications. However, such parts need to be frequently joined with various metal alloys in many structural elements leading to better mechanical performance. Many studies have reported enhancing polymer-metal bonding by adhesives, adhesive/rivet combined joint, and different surface treatments. This paper investigates the influence of various surface treatments on metal surfaces' adhesion between glass-reinforced PPS and Aluminum. Adhesion strength was evaluated via the shear test. Correlations between the shear strength of the polymer-metal with different metal-substrate treatments were studied. It was proved that the bonding strength is strongly affected by the micromechanical interlocking structure between the PPS and Aluminum.
