Reinforced nanofibre-based membranes for model water microfiltration

  • Original language description

Water is gammg in importance as a strategie raw material and economical use of it is crucial. Out of the various techniques that exist for treating water, advanced membranes have the greatest potential to solve difficulties relating to the matter across the globe. Findings are reported on their application for the purposes of liquid filtration. The preparation of electrospun homogeneous nanofibrous structures with customized morphology and properties as well as the selection of suitable textile supports for necessary membrane reinforcement are described.Utilizing a support substrate enhanced the applicability of the nanostructured membranes, herein a polyethylene terephthalate nonwoven textile with a broad distribution of molecular weights. The novel approach developed of connecting a nanostructure and supporting layer resulted in minimal loss of the area of nanostructure for filtration, as well as bringing about a smooth membrane inlet site which facilitated the removal of filter cake. In this context, membranes based on polyethylene terephthalate nonwoven textile were evaluated, encompassing investigation of various constructions of materials for filtration, the influence of nanostructured morphology, the process of cleaning them by backwashing and matters aff ecting their flux, filtration efficacy and life cycle. The resulting membranes demonstrated greater flux than existing commercial microfiltration products. By repeatedly backwashing a two-layer nanostructured membrane rose the flux of utility water through it when at a settled state measured 230 1 m-2 h-1, i.e. six times higher than without backwashing.Applying nanostructures that comprised a combination of layers of thin and thick nanofibres even more enhanced the flux of the microfiltration membranes, exhibited no permanent tendency for fouling at high flux levels and ensured high filtration efficacy for submicron particles, which was proven by gauging particle distribution prior to and after filtration.
