    Green solvents for electrospinning

  • Original language description

Electrospinning is a technique that is widely used to produce nanofibrous materials for various applications in different industries. The solvent choice is one of the important parameters of electrospinning because only a limited range of solvents can dissolve the relevant polymers and ensure subsequent fiber formation. Traditional solvents commonly used in the production- of polysulfone (PSU) and polyurethane (PU) nanofibers, such as dimethylformamide, are harmful to the environment and pose a risk to the health and safety of production workers. One solution is to use altemative, green solvents. The possibilities of preparing PSU and PU polymer solutions based on a system of mixtures of altemative solvents cyclopentanone, ethyl lactate and methyl lactate were studied. Nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning technology using green solvent-based polymer solutions. The effect of the conductivity enhancing additive content in the polymer solution on the thickness of the obtained nanofibers was evaluated. The applied green solvents can be used as a substitute for toxic organic solvents, while the polymer solution properties and processing conditions need to be optimized.
