Fundamental Characterization of Steam-Exploded Lignocellulosic Compounds
Original language description
This study aims to explore the composition of liquid and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) within fibers derived from lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) treated with steam explosion (SE). Understanding the compositions provides insight into how the fiber quality may be affected and how these compounds can be utilized. The SE process involved the auto-hydrolysis of LCB materials (reeds, wheat straws, and com stalks) under high temperatures (200-230 °C) for 30- 120 min, resulting in controlled explosions for fiber release. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) were utilized to comprehensively examine compound compositions. Additionally, headspace gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (HS-GC-FID) was used to assess VOCs in the fibers.
