Catalytic Device from Gold Nanoparticles-Chitosan Nanofibers Composite

  • Original language description

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are widely used thanks to their specific properties, such as the possibility of modifying their surface using various functional groups or their excellent optical and electronic properties, which depend on the shape and size of the resulting nanoparticles 1. Thanks to the constant development of syntheses and the involvement of less toxic materials such as polysaccharides, their usage is also expanding in the biomedical sector or applications in technical chemistry2. The second area includes catalytic reactions, such as the oxidation of carbon monoxide at low temperatures or the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP). Since 4-NP is a waste product from the production of explosives and plasticizers and is difficult to remove from the environment due to its thermal stability, photostability, and high resistance to biological decomposition, its reduction into a less toxic compound is desirable. For example, 4-AP can be used in the production of paracetamol3. ln our study, we focused on the preparation of AuNPs using dialdehyde cellulose (DAC). ln addition to the reduction of gold salt precursor and subsequent AuNPs stabilization by DAC, the utilization of this polysaccharide derivative results in the formation of a thin DAC layer on the surface of AuNPs with highly reactive aldehyde groups. These groups can then react with amine groups of chitosan nanofibers to form Schiff bases4. This enables us to covalently bond AuNPs to chitosan substrate. The formed imine bond is subsequently stabilized by reduction with sodium triacetoxyborohydride to form a more stable secondary amine. The composite prepared in this way (AuDAC-CHIT) can be subsequently used to assemble a catalytic device to reduce 4-NP to 4-AP.
