New Perspectives on Self-Monitoring of Internal Rubber Failure Using Piezoresistivity

  • Original language description

Carbon black (CB) fillers are widely used to enhance the ultimate strength and durability of rubber products. Interestingly, CBs are also electrically conductive, and at low filler concentrations, this property has been successfully exploited by researchers to monitor changes in the mechanical properties of rubber through piezoresistance evaluation. In this work, I investigated the piezoresistive response of deformed natural rubber (NR) filled with higher concentrations of CB, which are commonly encountered in rubber products subjected to dynamic loading conditions such as tires, conveyor belts, and vibration dampers. Our findings revealed that high CB content significantly decreases the piezoresistive signal, severely limiting the material's self-monitoring capability. Moreover, we observed unexpected and undesirable electromechanical phenomena, namely the precursor of shoulder peak phenomenon (PSPP) and shoulder peak phenomenon (SPP), which adversely affect electromechanical applications. However, these otherwise undesirable phenomena were ingeniously utilized for self-monitoring the rubber integrity during cyclic deformation. The gradual increase in residual strain, indicative of rubber matrix fatigue, was clearly correlated with changes in the experimentally detectable electrical resistance as a function of the precursor of shoulder peak phenomenon (PSPP) and the shoulder peak phenomenon (SPP).
