Apple Waste to Advanced Energy: Sustainable Porous carbon and TFA Electrolyte for high performance supercapacitors
Original language description
The development of cost-effective and hierarchical carbon materials from biowaste has gained significant attention in recent years, particularly for energy storage applications such as supercapacitors. Despite their promíse, biowaste-derived carbon materials often suffer from limited electrochemical performance, including low specific capacitance and energy density. In this study, activated carbon (AC) was synthesized from apple waste (A W) using potassium permanganate (KMnO4) activation followed by differenct carbonization at temperatures. Comprehensive characterization-XRD, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, EDX, and BET-was employed to investigate the structural, chemical, and morphological features of the resulting materials.Electrochemical performance was evaluated through cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The optimized AW-derived AC exhibited a high surface area delivered an impressive specific capacitance. When tested in trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) electrolyte, the AC electrodes demonstrated a wide potential window and superior performance compared to conventional electrolytes.Symmetric supercapacitors based on TF A showed excellent cycling stability (93.5% capacitance retention over 5000 cycles.
