Biopolymers with antimicrobial properties have gained attention in biomedical fields for producing different healthcare materials, viz., implants, scaffolds, etc. Bacterial cellulose (BC), in spite of being a versatile biopolymer with a wide range of applications in healthcare, does not have any innate antimicrobial properties. In this work, probiotic bacterial cellulose (PBC) is synthesized by co-culturing BC producing bacteria, Komagataeibacter xylinus (Kx) and a probiotic bacterial strain, Pediococcus pentosaceus (Pp), to integrate the extracellular antimicrobial compounds released by Pp within the BC mat. The newly synthesized biopolymer/biomaterial (PBC) having antimicrobial properties within it, denoted as ‘PBC_Pp’. This material is tested against gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli (E. coli). PBC_Pp has shown distinct inhibition zones in the case of both E. coli and S. aureus. Moreover, PBC_Pp has shown its native chemical, thermal and morphological properties as BC. The newly synthesized PBC_Pp is revealing quite a good antimicrobial property including its inherent polymer properties of BC. The co-culture of bacterial strain (Kx and Pp) in a specific growth medium, resolves to develop some innovative biopolymer (PBC_Pp) which could be implemented for the preparation of various healthcare applications in the form of hydrogels, implants or scaffolds.
