Molybdenum silicate microspheres synthesized through a combined condensation method as catalysts for olefin metathesis

  • Original language description

Olefin metathesis is a highly versatile reaction that involves the redistribution of carbon–carbon double bonds (C=C), with applications ranging from fine chemical synthesis to large-scale petrochemical processes. In this study, we report the development of molybdenum silicate microspheres as efficient heterogeneous catalysts for propylene metathesis. These microspheres are synthesized through a two-step process that combines microwave-assisted synthesis with subsequent condensation. Initially, bis(acetylacetonato)dioxomolybdenum(VI) reacts with biphenyl-4,4′-dicarboxylic acid under microwave irradiation to form a hybrid molybdenum biphenyl dicarboxylate precursor. This intermediate is then condensed with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane, yielding hybrid molybdenum silicate solids. Calcination at 500 °C in air produces amorphous, porous Mo-SiO₂ microspheres with highly dispersed molybdate species.[1,2] The structural and surface properties of the catalysts were characterized using electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption isotherms, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and solid-state 29Si NMR. In situ UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) confirmed the homogeneous dispersion of MoOx species, which are responsible for the high catalytic activity observed in propylene metathesis. Compared to conventional silica-supported MoOx catalysts prepared via incipient wetness impregnation, the Mo-SiO₂ microspheres exhibited nearly two orders of magnitude higher steady-state reaction rates, achieving up to 4.11 × 10–5 mol g⁻¹ s⁻¹.
