    The principal aim of the work was to ascertain to what extent and under what conditions a postmodifying infinitive can be replaced by a relative clause. The research material drawn from two sets of stylistically different samples, fiction and academic prose showed on the basis of the results that the postmodifying infinitive is more common in academic prose than in fiction.
