The paper presents the activities of the Association of Historical Settlements in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia in the field of protecting th monuments and encouragement of tourism in the Czech historic towns. The next part of the paper deals with the result of a socilogical survey performed among th citizens of a representative group of urbna conservation areas listed for their architectural excellence. It quotes opinions of people regarding the cultural heritage protection, living in such places and ways of utilizing these sites in tourism. The last part of the paper analyzes the processes of service restructuring in the historical centre of the medieval town of Tábor, as an example of the Czech historical town. The authors focused on quantitive and qualitative changes in the distribution of services in the historic center.
