Azimuthal localization of a sound source relies on two main binaural clues: the difference in sound levels at the ears (interaural level difference, ILD) and the different times of arrival of the sound at the ears (interaural time difference, ITD). The detection and coding of the ILD and ITD are performed by the cells in the superior olivary complex, namely in the lateral and medial superior olive. It is assumed that the lateral superior olive (LSO) is responsible mainly for processing of the ILD, however, several studies suggest that in some cases it is sensitive also to the ITD. In the current work, we explore two neuronal mechanisms which are biologically plausible for the LSO operation: subtraction of firing rates and detection of coincidence of concurrent spikes. Using an analytical computational model, we analyze the theoretical performance of the two mechanisms with respect to ILD and ITD detection and we determine the precision of the processing in dependence on various paramet
