The present paper deals with the issue of shifts in meaning of artworks caused by restoration interventions. restoring is a distinct creative act often resulting in a slightly changed or completely altered interpretation of a work of art. Art historical targeted research of artworks helps to recognize and explain motives and reasons for these alterations in the period context, reasons that were initially urged by the damaged work itself and by the owner´s interest to restore it. This issue is evidenced here by four examples representing the basic types of interventions producing the alternated perception of a person or figure depicted: alteration in the text that forms a part of the image, completion of a misleading textual identification, alteration of details in the painting and confusion of an attribute.
