    Wood-and-clay buildings in medieval Opava

  • Original language description

The study provides the summary of knowledge of wood-and-clay development of medieval Opava, which is based primarly on the archeologically investigated basements of burgher houses. In last decades, there was a boom of rescue archaeologial excavations on original urban areas. Sunken basements are often the only remains of medieval houses. There were identified 16 of these objects on ten localities. The presented examples show that wood-and-clay architecture predominated in the first phases of the existence of medieval town and was only replaced by stone houses to a greater extent from the Late Middle Ages. The construction of basements, their position on the area and other charakteristics are important for our knowledge of urbanization of the town of Opava.
