Original interiors and reconstructions in the Royal Residences of Savoy: A methodological approach for conservation and a challenge for museums

  • Original language description

The aim of this article is to present the work of the Conservation and Restoration Centre "La Venaria Reale" in Italy, using the example of the reconstructions of the interiors in the Royal Residences of Savoy. The emblematic case for Savoy residences is the Palazzina di Caccia of Stupinigi: a hunting lodge, a Rococo architectural monument, the seat of representation of the Napoleonic Empire in Piedmont, the last residence of Queen Margherita of Savoy at the beginning of the twentieth century, a museum of furniture since 1926 and now a museum of its history. In this context, all the objects represent a moment in the life of the residence, and the challenge of the museological project is to tell this story through the works, without having to reconstruct or set up. Conversely, there are cases where reconstruction is necessary. The Conservation and Restoration Centre "La Venaria Reale" was put in front of a reconstruction project on the occasion of the restoration of rooms damaged by the massive fire that severely damaged the Moncalieri Castle in 2008. The challenge is to rethink the technical methods and materials that would make it possible to reopen the museum residence to the public, knowing that all the decisions were the son of that particular moment and that restoration can never return the works of art to their "lost glory". This is also a telling value for the educational journey in museums and for public engagement programmes.
