Socialist Agricultural Cooperatives in the Bohemian Lands
Original language description
Cooperatives, especially in agriculture, repeatedly played not only an economic but also a political role in the Bohemian lands in the 20th century. The formation of so-called unified agricultural cooperatives, referred to as collectivization, was abused by the communist regime under the slogan of "socialization of the village" to consolidate its power, politically control the countryside, restrict private land ownership, and eliminate private agricultural enterprises. It was one of the few successful communist projects, essentially completed in 1960. However, the price was high. Collectivization had irreversible impacts in the economic, environmental, psychosocial, cultural, and other spheres. The text summarizes the results of domestic research on the topic to date and, on this basis, provides a periodization of collectivization, its course, and explains its essence. The resulting project is in accordance with the Science and Research Concept of the National Museum of Agriculture, and more specifically, Research Intent I., activity no. 3 – title: Research in the field of rural and regional development.
