Original language description
The publication focuses on the unique Baroque print View of Jerusalem with Christ’s Passion by the Augsburg draughtsman, engraver, and publisher Johann Daniel Herz the Elder, dating from around 1735, which recently enriched the old print collection of the Olomouc Museum of Art. This extraordinary work, the largest known print of its time produced from a single copperplate on one sheet of handmade paper, is examined from art-historical, topographical, and iconographic perspectives. The publication also places the print within the broader context of virtual pilgrimages to the Holy Land and analyses selected medieval and early modern artefacts connected with pilgrimage practice. Attention is likewise paid to the demanding restoration of this remarkable sheet, the only surviving copy known in the Czech Republic. As a whole, the publication contributes to a deeper understanding of pilgrimage culture, visual representations of Jerusalem, and early modern religious imagery.
