Traffic Counts on Roads in the Czech Republic

  • Original language description

Traffic counts (surveys) represent one of the basic methods used in traffic engineering for detection and evaluation of traffic flow characteristics on roads. On the basis of the data obtained, we can derive prospective needs (determining the quality of transport quality, construction of new roads, reconstruction of existing bottlenecks in road traffic etc.) - these data are the necessary basis for capacity assessment of road infrastructure. Traffic surveys are used in order to find out the current traffic characteristics on a road section (for the purpose of optimizing traffic devices, but also as a basis for pre-project preparation of road constructions). Some of the surveys work with the input data provided by traffic counts. The following part of the paper describes the different methods of vehicle detection used in road traffic counting and during the largest traffic survey conducted in the Czech Republic entitled National Traffic Survey.
