The Czech Museum of Communism: What National Narrative for the Past?
Original language description
In the aftermath of the 1989 Velvet Revolution, a political debate took place in the Czech Republic over the best way to deal with the country’s recent history. Issues at stake included the purging of the former elites, the banning of the Communist Party, and the opening of the party and secret police archives. These issues have exposed a fault line within the Czech political sphere and the wider public. Almost thirty years later, can an appeased narrative of the communist past unite these deeply divided communities? Is it realistic for a “neutral, authoritative, and trustworthy” vision to find its place in a museum of communism, for instance?
